Must have: better job control on the CLI by archnerd 2004-12-06 05:08:46
UNIX job control is really primitive. I'd really like to be able redirect stdin/stdout/stderr for any process, on the fly, while the process is running, and have the process not need to know about it. That means that putting a job in the background is as simple as temporarily connecting its pipes to /dev/null (or the OS's equivalent), and not having to suspend as soon as it needs to write something to stdout/err while in the background. In UNIX the 'screen' program takes care of a lot of this, but it really ought to be integrated into the kernel.
