unless you can be sure of having that distance (more actually, need to allow for actual perception and reaction time, plus safety factor) clear in front of you. And if you are doing 90mph you need much more. But if you hit a solid object (e.g. a big cliff) at 65mph, you'll die. Same as if you hit it at 90mph.

Maximum impact speed for assured survival is incredibly low - I think I've seen 10mph but I would't stand behind that figure. But it is very low.

When most people say they "crashed doing 70mph " or whatever, they mean that they were doing 70mph before they started braking. And many crashes don't involve impact with something solid until a lot of the speed has been scrubbed off.
(Of course if you've got a full space frame round you, you're wearing racing harness and a helmet etc the odds go up quite a lot )
