On that basis no-one should travel more than about 10mph. Because that is the highest surviveable crash speed. Sure, it will take longer to claw back from 120mph (or 90mph) than from 70mph. But if you hit a solid something at 70mph you are dead for certain anyway. So the only question is whether there is a reliably predictable sufficient distance to stop at *whatever* speed you are doing. Heaps of stopping room - 120mph may be fine (assuming other things are OK). Reliably predictable stopping distance of a hundred yards (ie the ditance you will ahve to stop if something goes wrong , eg a person runs in front of you) - you need to be down to 30mph max . Even if that is on a motorway.

Problem with SnArl's speed wasn't the speed - it was that speed in a situation where the reliably predicatble stopping distance was inadeqaute for that speed.
