Attn: Math Types. Quaternions. by williamashbless 2004-10-22 14:14:59
What can you guys tell me about quaternions? I've been reading my way around the web, but derivations are a little confusing where they exist at all.

Multiplying and adding two hypercomplex numbers with the correct relationship between i, j, and k don't present any sort of a problem in itself, but I fail to see a way to prove that the multiplication actually correctly combines two quaternions into one representing the overall rotation and scaling of a vector.

I also still can't easily see the relationship between the coefficients and the parameters necessary to adjust a vector, and it eludes me how to perform the quaternion operation on a vector.

I can implement them with the material I've found, but that's a far cry from understanding why they work.

Any hints?
