...as SnArL labelled her: If she were doing 80mph (just guessing, because we don't know how fast she was going and which is at least 5mph over the speed limit in his locale) then she probably wouldn't expect to be overtaken by another driver going 40mph faster. If she had noticed him in her rearview mirror even 10 seconds earlier, she'd probably be very surprised to find that the gap had closed that quickly and may be the reason for her panicking and putting on the brakes. A 40mph delta speed closes a 587 foot (179 meter) gap in 10 seconds. Should she have been in the middle or right lane? Perhaps. Then again maybe she'd just passed someone doing 70mph.
