The default action when faced with a dangerous situation on the road is to slow down. 90% of the time, even if that doesn't help it means that when you do crash you're not going as fast and so don't plow into the bedroom of the house across the road quite so forcefully.

The distinction being that somebody coming up behind you 20mph faster than you isn't a dangerous situation and so you don't react. It's only morons going at speeds normally reserved for X-prize contenders who force people to knee-jerk on the road.

Instincts are very bad things to control 2 tons of metal with.
