I recall driving one night towards Sarnia (hwy 402) when I was younger.

I looked in my rear-view mirror and saw nothing. in the left lane, lights in the right, far behind me.

I looked forward.

I looked rear-view again. Lights in the left lane and right lane, still far behind me.

I looked forward.

I looked rear-view again. Lights in left lane growing *very fast*.

Moved to right lane and watched a Porsche go past me literally like I was standing still (I was at 120kph at the time).

The road ahead was empty. I floored it. Got up to 185kph and he was *still* vanishing at an incredible rate.

My rate of mirror checking would have been *fine* for traffic anywhere near normal speed. This guy was so fast that had I waited another couple of seconds to check, he would have had to go around me or slow down. My guess is he would have gone around. And if I'd reacted just a second slower, I would have signalled and started going right at the same time.

That would have been *bad*.
