a "painful memory" and remembering the Alamo. Personally I'd say it's a bit of a stretch to try and claim anything is a painful memory unless you've got some sort of personal connection to the event. Neither reading about something nor being told a story about it can ever truly instill the kind of feelings that being there can. My grandmother went through the Canadian residential school system. For those who don't know what that was, there's an excellent book available here or here that will give you an idea. Now after reading that and hearing the stories of my grandmother's experiences I still can't claim that it is anything close to painful memory for me. Those are reserved for the things I've been forced to go through myself. - DW
