An Inuit Home Ec class. A little different.	by toxin	2006-11-19 12:55:59
While inspecting the school in Sanikiluaq, I walked through the Home Economics class. You know the course... how to be a proper little home-maker: cooking and sewing and all that "traditional" stuff. They do that traditional stuff up here. It is just a different tradition. First off, it was a group of 15-16 year old girls sitting around on the floor, with blood and gore up to their elbows. Dead baby seals were being skinned and gutted to provide the furs needed for making gloves. The meat was going to be cooked for lunch... or not. Eating raw baby seal is traditional. This is the way things are up here. Very traditional, but not our traditions. Transplanting the average city girl from down south to this scene would have resulted in a pile of vomit on the floor. Sweet young things pulling intestines out of dead animals is a bit... different. This is the school.
