It would simplify transport, but betray the customer: for the same weight, you get more shell than with round melons. BTW: Big Melons by Ritsch-Renn (I cannot navigate on that site) in c't Schlagseite (c't = 'legendary' German computer mag published in 2 week issues). "Everyday I have 50,000 visitors on my homepage. But they don't buy anything. They all want to see nothing but photos. Do you understand that? Well, I do not." In the meantime that cartoon was overtaken by reality: the address on the image really exists and leads to non-FYOSS content. I hope this passes, as it is not linked.
