But not quite. I just finished watching the CBC where they had a big bit on it. A Syncotron is a big flashlight :). When electrons are spun at high velocity they begin to produce light in many different wavelengths. This is a very high intensity light that is used to visually observe many different things. The analogy they used to explain it was, remember the microscope from high school with the light at the bottom. Imagine replacing it with a light a few million times brighter then the Sun and you'll be able to pick out much finer detail. So essentially this Synotron allows the researchs to create very high intensity light in many different wavelengths ( from infrared up to xray ) See wikpedia Synchrotron for more information.
