How would you interpret it? by niwikki 2004-10-21 19:30:28
If someone came up to you at a gas station in a bit of a panic, offered to buy your gas with his gas card in exchange for you doing something that's completely not registering in your mind cuz it just doesn't make sense (besides the fact that you've already paid for your gas and wouldn't let someone else pay for it regardless), and he tells his tale of woe at having accidentally locked his daughter in his car across the street and the locksmith that came doesn't speak english and he's short on cash and needs "two twelve"...

Would you interpret that as $2.12 or as $212?

I interpreted it as $2.12. The guy seemed well-kept, probably not homeless, probably legitimately in need though... and his story was probably made up... but I decided to be nice and give him $1 so he'd only have to get $1.12 from someone else if his story was actually true. While I was getting the money out of my car he was running around asking a bunch of other people for help... then when I handed him the dollar saying I couldn't give him all he was asking for but I could give him that, he said "what did you think I was asking for" and I said "you said you needed 'two twelve', but I can't give you that." and he got a confused look on his face and walked off with the dollar.

It didn't occur to me until a while after I'd left that "two twelve" could be interpreted in multiple ways.

Is it possible he needed $212 and seriously thought someone would be willing to help him with that kind of expense? It'd surely explain why he was offering to let me hold on to his cell phone and pager and watch as collateral... [if they were really his and not stolen]...

But if he was really looking for $212, why keep the $1 rather than handing it back to the person UNABLE to assist with more than that?
