Usually the problem with that is that the hunk allocation is stupid as compared to the amount of memory on the machine; most laptops use shared system RAM for their video adapters, and this might have thrown the game off, because it saw more memory than it could access (provided, of course, this laptop actually DOES share memory to video :).
