So, I bought a Hitachi 160 gb deskstar (I saw the convo below, and I know about the issues) for a very good price. $60 after rebate. I plan on putting the DVDs I want to watch often on the drive so I don't have to mess about with the drive. Why not?
Went to install it, and I had to move around a bunch of stuff; I think I need a bigger case. Get everything set up, and hope to avoid the extra software. Windows didn't see it, so I ran the software. Now it knew there was something there, but wouldn't let me do anything about it. After rebooting and much irritation, I decided to change cables. Worked on the first try!
However, the Tyan Thunder K7, despite having native scsi support, doesn't like having a scsi a a boot drive. It will always try to move the IDE drive first, EACH TIME YOU ADD HARDWARE! What numbskull thought this one up? Took me an hour to figure it out the first time it happened; that was when I added a firewire card. Nothing quite like closing the case, hitting the power button and seeing "NTLDR Not Found. Press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart."
I had to unplug the main power to board to slide the drive cage out. I didn't realize when I plugged it back it that power to the supply was still hot. And that supply with that mobo performs a hot start every time. That will give you a heart attack, plugging it in and having it kick on!
In the middle of all of this I had to drive out to FedEx to pick up the new hard drive for my laptop. I got lost no less than six times. SIX! The roadway system in the greater Syracuse area makes *no* sense. On the upside, the lady at Fedex was really cool, even though I had to wait 'cause the truck wasn't back yet, when it did come it she took care of me first.
Now to eat dinner, back up and perform a hard drive swap on my thinkpad. Hopefully this goes a bit smoother...
