If they say "you need to prove your age", then you can present any suitable document. If you choose to present your DL, that's your choice.You can present something else (HANZ card) if you choose. But no-one (except police when you are driving) can *demand* to see your DL - or demand the number. Ditto for passport (except immigration etc).

Admittedly, problem is that most people don't *have* any age identification other than PP or DL.

But, realistically, so long as no-one has the *right* to demand to see it, I don't have a problem with using DL as ID for my own convenience. It's when it becomes obligatory that I object.
