*resisting urge to stab George Lucas in the face* by YakkoWarner2004-10-21 14:42:38
Hate to say it, but... by Hoth 2004-10-21 16:10:14
... the changes made absolutely zero difference to my enjoyment of the DVDs. The only reason people are so bothered by it is that they've become too attached to their memory of the original. The changes were really neither good nor bad -- they were utterly insignificant. If you're not looking for the special effects, you don't notice them. A lot of people seem to be more interested in exactly recreating some experience they had many years ago, rather than just enjoying the movies. I say they don't belong carefully preserved in a museum under glass with "don't touch" signs... it's not any past experiences with it that make me love Star Wars, it's the story itself, which Lucas has certainly not harmed.

I will admit that I did find the use of Hayden Christensen a bit odd, since if they're going to make them look like they did in their prime then it would seem as though they should've replaced Alec Guiness with Ewan McGregor in the scene. It seemed more natural to me to show Anakin at the age he was when he died, looking like he would have at that age if he hadn't fallen into the lava. Still, it wasn't a change worth paying much attention to since the part involves doing nothing at all. I guess Lucas thinks that it shows Anakin's redeemed status better to have him look like he did before he had turned to the dark side, and maybe he's right.
