Somebody explain background radiation to me by SnappingTurtle2004-10-21 14:37:37
Quick and dirty: by BloodyViking 2004-10-21 15:40:20
There are radioactive atoms all over the place. They emit radiation when they decay. The earth is constantly bombarded by radiation fronm the sun, starts, black holes, what have you (mainly the sun). Thus, some level of radiation is all over the place all of the time. We call it background radiation.

If you want more detail, LionsPhil's link is pretty decent if you can stand the pop-ups.
