I've just found an old framed photograph in a box in my home. The 4 x 10 commercially produced image (entitled "Witchery") seems to date from about 1910-1914 given the style of clothing and the label on the back.
The subject is a young lady, photographed demurely from the side, wearing nothing but what appears to be a filmy lace shawl. The lace is see-through but covers her from her shoulders to her knees, and you can't see anything anyway because of her pose. The photograph is mainly sepia-coloured but the lace has been tinted pale green.
The sticker on the back is for the Royal Picture Gallery, 113A Eighth Avenue West, Calgary. They advertise "by special appointment to Their Late Majesties Queen Victoria and King Edward the Seventh". The backing paper is in shreds and the matting is torn and cracked, and the photograph seems to be a bit wavy (as if it had some water damage 50 years ago) in one corner.
I wonder where it came from. |
