Somebody explain background radiation to me by SnappingTurtle 2004-10-21 14:37:37
There's this thing called "radiation": radioactive stuff emits it. Got it. Too much of it is bad. Got it. However, there's always some radiation around. That's called "background radiation". Got it.

That's all I got... if indeed I was even accurate so far.

  • What is radiation? I mean, what's hitting my cells that might cause bad things to happen?
  • Is there just one form of background radiation?
  • Who's measuring this background radiation? Do they keep timed plots of it?
I ain't Michael Crichton or Tom Clancy, happily spending years delving into volumes of technical details to give my story that authentic feeling. I'm just a part time science fiction hack trying to hack my way through my first novel. Somebody help a hack out and explain this stuff to me in words of one syllable or less.
