if you were a law student with the ultimate goal of assisting working-class musicians to protect their rights (in all aspects of their lives), which classes from the below would you take?
Pick one from this list:
- Labor Law
(pro musicians are necessarily members of unions)
- Triad Advocacy
(sometimes you've gotta go to trial, especially during those jobs you take while getting experience so one of those music firms will hire you. This is one of those courses where you're actually standing up in front of the class asking questions of "witnesses", objecting to opposing counsel's questions, and giving opening/closing arguments.)
- Electronic Legal Research
(the primary task for young attorneys is research w/ writing based on the research... I suck at research, especially using the electronic sources that are supposed to be so much easier to use...)
- Income Taxation I
(let's face it, everyone pays income tax [at least in the US...])
And pick one from this list:
- Civil Procedure II
(like Trial Ad, it's good experience for those interim jobs and provides practical experience writing a lot of the motions involved in trial procedure)
- Landlord/Tenant Law
(heavily tested on the bar exam, apparently. Also, everyone needs a home, and I bet most working-class musicians rent. At least I know *I* rent...)
- Introduction to Negotiations
(let's face it, everyone has to negotiate something at some point in their lives... and musicians like anyone else need good deals negotiated for them)
- Cybercrime and Intellectual Property Offenses
(with the rampant IP offenses that directly affect musicians, this may be an intriguing course)
- Internet Law and Technology
(a fun class, I'm sure... and internet law may be a good way for me to get my foot in the door somewhere, with my internet background...)
- Intellectual Property in the Digital Age
(which is definitely pertinent to musicians who advertise and sell primarily online)
Any thoughts?
I'm not asking what I should take, but what YOU would take (cuz I know that every person is different and therefore has different needs and different types of classes they'd enjoy). |
