Don't mistake either of those for the middle finger. The middle finger is AFAIK always the longest, but the two on either side (the index finger towards the thumb, and the ring finger away from the thumb) can be approximately equal in length. Flip a bird, and you will know the middle finger well - it sticks out like a sore thumb.
