or any flaws therein. (warning POLITICAL POST)
1) Iraq/Saddam develops weapons of mass destruction.
2) Iraq/Saddam invade/occupy Kuwait.
3) a) An allied force organized by a community of nations (the UN) drives Iraq/Saddam out of Kuwait but b) stops short of occupying a sovereign nation-state, and c) oversees destruction of existing Iraqi WMD's
4) UN community of nations creates security (no-fly) zones etc. to prevent further Iraqi aggression.
4) United Nations passes 17(ish) resolutions/economic sanctions etc. to prevent Iraq/Saddam from developing/posessing new WMD's
5) Iraq does not act as an agressor nation in terms of attacking other sovereign nation states.
5) Using the rationale that Iraq/Saddam have continually violated said resolutions/sanctions, US (and allies) invade Iraq.
6) US (and allies) defeat Iraqi military forces.
6) Despite concerted efforts, the US (and allies) find that Iraq/Saddam does NOT posess WMD's, are forced to conclude that their own intellegence gathering and analysis was fooled by Iraq/Saddam deceptions designed to make it's hostile neighbor Iran (and others) THINK it posessed WMD's.
Conclusion:
a) Presence of sanctions combined with absence of WMD's following invasion seems to indicate that UN sanctions DID work,
b) Proven success of said sanctions negates arguement that the US was justified in adopting a "preemptive defense" philosophy, subsequently
c) US leadership could be considered guilty of violations of international law.
