Looking for the former is cynicism; the latter, mindful[1] pragmatism.

If one person makes another's life better, in even the tiniest way, it unavoidably makes the benefactor's universe a
better for the benefactor, if only for a moment, simply because they share that universe with the beneficiary. For
the benefactor to deny that they benefit from their "altruism" is in fact a form of *ingratitude*, and cheapens the
act as surely as does the assumption that the act is purely manipulative.
