The crux of the matter is really definitions of "self-interested" versus "selfish".
If one accepts the notion that "all things are connected", even an altruistic act may be an act of self-interest,
in that, if anyone benefits, all benefit, and thus the self benefits.
To put it in other terms, if both parties are part of a the same system (or interacting systems), some kind of
"ripple effect", however subtle, is almost *inevitable*, even if the benefactor is unknown, simply because
something in the system has been changed.
In quantum mechanical terms, "we're all entangled".
