Hopefully some of these suggestions aren't relevant as you've already read them ;-), but here's what jumps to mind off the top of my head:
-Douglas Adams - H2G2 series... I haven't read any of the Dirk Gently books yet, but I've heard they're just as good.
-Terry Pratchett - Discworld books
-Isaac Asimov - Robots series or Foundation series.
-Steven King - I like all his stuff, but the later you get in his career, the more refined his style becomes, with less reliance on gore, and more reliance on suspense, and basically, just good storytelling. The Dark Tower series has a more fantasy feel, as do The Talisman and Black House (sequel to The Talisman).
-Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert - Dune series
-Bruce Schneier - Beyond Fear... nonfiction, good book on security (applying concepts he's learned in computer security to the "real" world). Though I've just started this book, I really like his writing, and the book has gotten many excellent reviews, so I'm pretty confident. |
