I _could_ see it as honest and not quite extremist (though I'd be inclined to the latter interpretation first). Those who think the modern Republicans are not upholding the original ideals of their party, for example, might think that way. But when this guy called you a "fag", I cannot help but see that as ultra-conservative neo-con bigotry. Which is not meant to insult him - I just make that kind of connection when I see homophobia linked to strong conservative values.
