With a 20 gal. tank you need to be very careful not to overstock it though. Betas can be feisty, so you need to be careful not to get anything to aggressive.

Neon tetras are ok, but I have started getting into the other tetra breeds. Got a few columbian red and blue tetras right now. I have had pristellas in the past which I find very pretty.

A pair or three of clown loaches always are good in my book. They are orange and black and are great fun to watch.

I also like rainbow fish alot. I have had bosemanis in the past. They are Purple and yellow and look very nice. I currently have a few australian rainbows that are a metal blue in color.

The big thing I look for in fish are size, aggression, and color, not necessarily in that order. There are quite a few fresh water breeds out there that can rival the saltwater fish for color. The other thing is to buy them from a store that specializes in fish. SO often the megamarts don't have staff that know how to maintain the tanks properly. If you see floaters, that is a bad sign.
