And for some, a valid one. There are zealots. No doubt, no denial.

I'll extend some credentials here for just a sec, only so that you know I'm not completely speculating. I was an Army Psychological Operations Specialist whose primary area of expertise was the Arabic world and former Soviet break-away states.

Now that that is out of the way, yes....there are those who want nothing more than to become martyrs. They are a minority. The vast majority of people want to lead simple, peaceful lives. It is a culture that is highly motivated by respect. One of the biggest factors for the unpopularity of the US outside of it's blind support of Isreal is that the populous thinks that Americans don't respect them.

*If* soldiers can be re-trained to understand the cultural differences *and* they can show prudence in their action, then some of what's left of the 'haters' will come around. If your demonized enemy is acting like a civilized gentleman, it's hard to maintain a heart full of hate. Especially when you are denying yourself creature comforts that the opposition will willingly provide. I.e. Security, food, shelter, water, a bed to sleep in at night. Keep in mind....a few hundred armed men in a town is not indicitive of the entire populous of that town. There are those who welcome the Coalition with open arms and hope. Yes, some of those have had their opinions sour, more will in the future.

he who carries the assault rifles gets the most attention paid to him.

The biggest obstacle we face in-country is thinking not like a military but like someone who is honestly trying to help. The military (Army and Marines especially) are indoctrinated with what I call the "Go North, Kill Everything" mentallity. Unfortunately, large-scale, protracted Air-Land battle is unlikely to happen anywhere in the world save North Korea and China. Rather than viewing their primary mission as assistance, they view that as 'additional duty'. So they try to adapt tactics for waging high-intesity conflict to guerilla war. It doesn't work. What is really unfortunate (and this is the voice of experience talking here) is that when you don't know who is a bad guy, and who is a good guy, you view everyone with the hoary eye of suspicion. Of course the locals sense that, and it angers them. Not only do you tend to shoot first, ask later when you are afraid you are about to be killed, but all the dicipline in the world does not change the fact that that is the culture the troops are trained in. A top-down paradigm shift has to occurr in the institutional conciousness of the military to win the hearts and minds.

It will be a long row to hoe, but it is something that must be done.
