Some states have laws effectively banning same-sex marriages by defining marriage as between one man and one woman. If a couple is two fellers who married out-of-state and comes to, say, Florida, their marriage isn't considered valid here. No woman, no marriage. It's a sore point, and hasn't definitively been ruled on, but that's how it's enforced right now until someone with the resources sues the dickens out of a state or two.
