How can one proclaim defeat | by thread_killer | 2004-09-24 10:21:24 |
| OK, it's not LOST. But the US, under Bush |

is losing. They are progressing frompoor performance in the aftermath of the battles to worse as ineffectual occupiers.
That is the fault of Mr. Rumsfeld. The fault of Mr. Bush was choosing to go to war in the first place, while cutting government resources (taxes). The ultimate fault of Mr. Bush has been in sticking with a Sec Def who:
1) Got it wrong, against military advise,
2) Has not changed tactics / strategy since things have deteriorated,
3) Refuses to admit that things are bad,
4) Has indirect responsibility for Abu Ghraib (ie, it happened under his watch, and he has then minimized it all along),
5) Has just placed positive spin about the fact that the US has insufficient control over 25% of Iraq, such that they can not hold free elections.
Questions:
Did Mr. Bush start the invasion after a lot of sober second thought?
Based on what I saw, NO. The invasion was pre-determined and the decision made inviolate before the case was made. All the pretext making and excuse giving was an attempt to make the invasion more palatable to the American people... and b'damned the rest of the world.
Was the invasion adequately planned?
Patently NO. Defeating the armies is not winning the war. The US military planned an operation to defeat the Iraqi military. They did not plan for winning the war, and did not want to plan for winning the war, as evidenced by the people who were trying to plan for a full war got retired all of a sudden.
Now the failures in planning are coming home to roost. I hold no confidence that the US policy-makers that gave you this tragedy will not generate a pretext for abandoning Iraq. Sadly, Mr. Rumsfeld is already developing that pretext, advocating a limited "free" election, after which it will be again "Mission Accomplished".
So, my position is:
-The war is being lost right now.
-Unless things change, and that starts with the people at the top changing, the war will continue to be on a losing mode.
-The ones in charge of creating a war that they are losing are starting to begin the rotation for spinning a victory out of abandoning the war.
-The likelihood of electoral change is getting slimmer all the time (and the palatability of that change is degrading), therefor, the chances of pulling the situation out of this losing mode is negligible.
Thus, the US will probably be defeated.
Note: I know a sniper from the Canadian forces in Bosnia. He says it was hell. I thank you for your service, and that of all others who served. |
