I could always tell about 10 seconds before the alarm went off when we were having a fire drill. Oddly enough, nobody else could hear the strobes charging. 'bout the same pitch as a TV, I think. I also remember once as a kid hearing the TV in the living room from my bedroom at 5am when my dad had it on mute with closed captioning to watch the morning news.
