As thread_killer very eloquently explained, yanking the forces out now would be tantamount to signing Iraq's death warrant as a unified nation-state.

Given the above, I'd like to see the U.S. administration go to the U.N. and show lots of humility. Then ask the other nations really nicely to please come in and lend a hand in fixing this mess.

With the world united in cleaning up Iraq, I think both the long- and short-term repercussions would be minimized.

Yes, it's a pipe-dream, and that pipe-dream starts at Bush showing one iota of humility.
