Nice town, one of the older universitys with a good reputation. You could do a lot worse.

A little distant from London but then you don't stike me as the sort of person that would want to be heading down to the big city every other weekend.

Obviously Oxford and Cambridge are nice but rather hard to get into at times. Probably more Oxford if you are looking for the arts type subjects but they are both good and wonderful towns. The would certainly be an experiance.
Generally in the UK the older universitys are all good and in nice places. The newer ones (~<100 years old) are a more hit and miss. There are still some very good ones but there are some dumps as well.
