under the entry for "non-":
In forming compounds, non- is normally joined with the following element without space or hyphen: nonnutritive. However, if the second element begins with a capital letter, it is separated with a hyphen: non-French.
This seems to imply that the rule is to exclude a hyphen, with a single exception as stated.
On the other hand, my Merriam-Webster gives no such rule; but it lists a few hundred non- words (note spacing and italicization, please!) in addition to those it actually defines; none of the defined or listed words is hyphenated except those which begin with a capital letter. |
