I never saw your final decision re: vet vs programmer. Southampton Uni has a five-star Computing department and is suprisingly un-brain dead when it comes to in-department IT (oh, sure, there's still flaws, but most places seem much, much worse). Of course, I may be a bit biased in that respect. ;) The "grand old" Universities -- Oxford and Cambridge -- have shonky computing depts from what I researched.
