that "the insurgents hate most all freedom-loving countries". But first we need to be clear on what precisely this means, since it's so often used (unfortunately) as a synonym for "countries favorable to the current US administration", or even as an essentially meaningless expletive simply intended to stir up patriotic feeling by its use of the word "freedom".
Do you mean "countries in which the population prefers to be free"? That would probably include all countries. Perhaps "countries in which the government states that they support freedom"? This would probably include most countries, as I can't think of any offhand whose rulers would state that they supported oppression. I'm not precisely sure of a definition that would not imply that the insurgents hate most all countries, period.
And why do you feel it is "safe to say" this? I can't imagine, for example, that the insurgents have any particular ill feeling against (for example) Andorra, or Ireland, or Chile, or Sri Lanka - and yet these certainly seem, offhand, to be freedom-loving countries.
I certainly hope that the conditions in which the Iraqi people live will improve, but I am far from certain, to put it mildly, that an invasion was the only possible way in which this improvement could be begun. |
