there's the potential for liability for copyright infringement, which can be HORRIBLY expensive.
For example, in the US it could be up to US$140,000 per infringement, which could be calculated as per song infringed or per download depending on how the court feels about it that day... I don't know whether there's a set precedent on this type of thing yet that the court would have to follow. Also, there's no knowing whether they would hold the organizers liable (for encouraging the infringements and allowing the downloads) or the performers liable (for recording the infringements and uploading them) or both.
I personally don't think this decision should be made without taking that into consideration.
Regardless, whatever the decision, I will *NOT* be involved in any future UFie Idol competition in any capacity because I simply cannot take that risk. |
