Follow-up to yesterday's plea for help... by GigiNYC 2004-09-23 15:47:40
First of all, I want to offer my thanks to Atrahasis, Dericpr, DragonLady, Freakazoid, KrakensDen, NOLAWitch, Phezult, and Tangrene for chipping in yesterday with suggestions re: my colleague's computer problems. Fortunately, there were no viruses that I could find and very little spyware (partially thanks to yours truly having installed and run the safeguards on a prior occasion). I was able to resolve the problem to some extent by enforcing a fixed setting of about 1GB on the swap file which at least helped to reduce it in size and freed up some memory -- which also had the effect of making it a little easier to run Scandisk. Fortunately, I don't think she's (yet) at the position where I have to reinstall Windows or physically go poking around inside the case -- I'm still more or less in the late larval/early pupal stage with regard to my evolution as a geek, and it does not yet extend as far as the hardware (especially since my own computer is a laptop which doesn't allow for that as much). I didn't have enough time last night to do everything that I wanted to accomplish, but y'all left me with a few ideas that I can still futz around with at a later time. So, once again...thanks, gang!
