What Linux? by AG_wyvern2004-09-22 21:34:52

Gentoo would give him a very solid base, but it's got a steep learning curve.
Redhat/mandrake/fedora dead simple but not great to work with (and shunned by most people here)
knoppix easy to install everything works...
or my favorite
Debian, pretty easy to install, not everything works all of the time (older hardware is probably better though) You can delve in and configure stuff, infact you need to at times. updating is dead simple.

I do recommend a stint in a gentoo system though perhaps not right off the bat. It gives a feel for how the core works and teaches you how to configure things the "hard way".
