Needing help and suggestions... by GigiNYC2004-09-22 18:59:53
  Check/limit swapfile size by phezult 2004-09-22 19:23:06
Window ME should not need a 2gb swapfile. I forget what it is, but there are tags to use with chkdsk and scandisk to purge old swapfile information.

See if cleaning this bit up will let you defrag it.

Try Start->Run->msconfig This will allow you to see what is being started with the computer and disable items in the registy without having to directly muck with the registry. The first time I ruined something in a registry, I was swearing for days. That was the only time I ever made a mistake with that, and that was on Win95.

Check the size of the background image. I know this sounds dumb, but it windows has to recompress and redraw a several mb image file constantly, it will hate you.

Download and run Memtest86 if you're concerned about the reliability of the RAM. It is a pre-os testing program. Throw it onto a cd and boot from that. Depending on the mobo, (if it is an intel BX) it may hate the new ram. The BX mobos weren't designed to run sticks bigger than 128mb. Window ME might not like this either...

If all else fails, buy a new HD, configure the old one as a slave, fresh install and copy pertinant data over.

HTH,
J
