Needing help and suggestions... by GigiNYC 2004-09-22 18:59:53
Generous-spirited little demi-geek that I am, I've recently been doing some informal tech support for one of my co-workers when she gets in a jam -- but I have to admit that the most recent conumdrum has me outclassed and I find myself forced to grovel before my betters and ask for help. The computer in question is a desktop running Windoze Me (I know, I know!) with a 6GB hard disk drive -- and following a RAM upgrade (I was not involved with that), the RAM is at 511MB. Her primary complaint is that the computer is too slow, which may have something to do with the processor (I don't know what speed it is, unfortunately). It occurs to me that part of the problem may be the fact that she only has less than a GB of free space left on the drive -- and small wonder, given that her swap file is over 2GB in size. It's also not possible to defragment the drive or run scandisk without being in safe mode -- it halts halfway through. Short of buying another computer, does anyone have any suggestions about what if anything can be done to make things work a little better?
