In the contract, there is what is called "statutory obligation." You can be discharged prior to the expiration of the statutory obligation (generally eight years), in which case you are not really out of the military, but transferred to the Individual Ready Reserve. Same goes for retired, but the obligation is different at that point.

So, technically, the job may or may not have formally ended, depending on the status of the statutory obligation.
