We all know, when we join the military, and even when we get out of the military, that we can be sent to strange foreign places where we stand a chance of being killed. Actually, we stand a chance of being killed in training in Podunk Alabama. I saw people die in training. It goes with the job. That doesn't make it a happy thing. It's just the purpose of a military is to kill people and break things. It's a dangerous occupation and one you take for life.
And anyone who does not know that, well, they're not reading the contract they sign before going to training. I read mine, I still have a copy, and I understand that if the military needs a qualified Intelligence Analyst with my specific skill set, that I can be called up again. I made that commitment years ago and I stand by it.
As far as a good reason for the war, the US had all the reason it needed. Iraq violated the terms of the armistice from the moment it was signed until the moment the coalition re-invaded Iraq. Iraq was known to have an active Nuclear, Biological and Chemical weapons program. The fact that nothing has been reported in the press or released subsequent to the re-invasion is not an indication that they did not have one prior to the re-invasion. In 1991, they transferred almost their entire Air Force out of country to avoid it being destroyed. The real concern now is where the weapons went, not whether they had them. Perhaps they are buried somewhere. Perhaps they have been transferred out of country to who knows what recipients.
Furthermore, knowing what we did prior to the re-invasion, it would have been a dereliction of duty for the government of the United States to not respond to a clear and present danger to the people of the United States. Either way, now that the United States is there, to leave Iraq at this point in time would further cement in the eyes of the world that the United States has no resolve and is not willing to stand by its commitments.
History as of 2004 indicates the operational tempo of terrorist activity against United States assets has decreased rather than increased as of this date. It will be interesting to see whether that trend continues.
But for now, I have to go see my doc so she can determine why I've had internal bleeding for the past week or so. Good luck with the thread.
Cheers,
