Any time I've set up VPN, the client gets an IP. I guess if that's not a sure thing, then I've just been lucky enough not to have hit that yet. Now, I have had issues when the remote subnet happens to be the same as the local subnet (which is a royal pain when I'm at a hotel, for instance, that happens to provide internet access on a 192.168.1.x subnet), but that's not the case here.
Client config does have "Use default gateway on remote network" checked.
