| How ancient a WinFax? |

Reason I ask... if it is one of the REALLY early version (as in not truly compatible with Windows 95 and above) you may encounter a problem. Under 95 and above, and particularly under XP, to get to the modem the program just about has to go through the TAPI.DLL (Telephony Application Programming Interface). Under 95 and 98, an earlier software package could "shove" TAPI aside and directly access the hardware a lot of the time (prior to Windows 95, that was the only way you talked to the modem). However, XP does tend to fight back. This may be part of the problem. So, if it is version of WinFax before the versions compatible with XP, you may be somewhat out of luck. Only thing I can think of is un-install the modem from windows and KEEP IT UNINSTALLED so that TAPI can't see it, and see if you can get the version of WinFax to activate it. If that's the problem.<BRE>
Hmmm... re-reading your post as I type this, I wonder whether WinFax is trying to do a call to an IPX modem share (such as in the early days of network modems that were shared via Novell). If so, you may be in for no end of head-aches. I'll try to check some of my ancient documentation when I get to work (I'm running late and haven't left home yet [9:30 server time... I'll make it up at the end of my day]).
Only thoughts that are coming to mind for me at the moment.
