Now that is genuinely scary. I'm reeeally glad our church doesn't do that - they don't even pass a plate - our pastor's take on it is "It's God's church, if He wants us around He'll move people's hearts to give - and if not, then we can take that to mean we're not supposed to be here anyway. But God's not about to file Chapter 11." And the fellowship went from about 600 people in 1998 when I moved to town to somewhere in the vicinity of 4000 on average right now. I've never seen a cardboard thermometer in the place. I would probably leave if I did. :)
