They just bought tickets for them and sent them on their way. My parents flew from Jakarta to Calgary via Tokyo. The cats flew via Frankfurt (on purpose silly!) and were very well taken care of by the airlines. In fact, I think they treated the cats better than they treated my parents! Contact some local airlines. IIRC it was very cheap to send the cats even though they were flying international - $500 for all three including a vet check in Frankfurt and Vancouver I think.
