I think part of the reason people behave this way is that they are comfortable with doubt in varying degrees.
I feel comfortable saying "God exists", and I believe it is absolutely true, in the same sense I believe that "I exist" is true. However, I also feel comfortable wondering whether in fact God might not exist (I routinely go through periods of doubt about this), and I'm (at least partially) open to the idea that I may not be correct in this claim. Does that make me inconsistent? Can I consistently claim that God exists and simultaneously that God may not exist? Because my religion, and most religions that I'm aware of, don't work if one merely acknowledges that God *may* exist - they require the outright claim that God *does* exist.
People who do not acknowledge in matters of faith that they might be wrong may feel themselves in this scenario...and I must say that I'm not sure how I can resolve the question I just raised there.
Scientists seem to have a much easier time with this problem, because they make a lot of pronouncements that appear to be absolute, but are known to scientists as constantly subject to revision. They don't make pronouncements that are intended to be absolute or universal, and so this problem of doubt and faith never arises for them.
I still don't know how to resolve the question I raised in paragraph 2. Argh. |
