The dust storms look dramatic, and are certainly messy, but usually don't have high enough wind speed to do too much damage. The worst problems are with microbursts from thunderstorms, they knock down buildings. We had our first rain of the season last night, a surprising 1" (2.5cm). The last few years urban heat island effect has kept most summer monsoon rainstorms from coming in. It's amazing to see them on radar split up and go around Phoenix. How do other cities manage to get rain?
