where that is accomplished, it is society's responsibility to help that person further, and that person's responsibility to use that help. I think you neglected some of my context, there.

I am a gambling addict. Just because I got it under control doesn't change that. I got help (in that case a bus ticket out of Vegas), and now believe that I can control it, and I've performed some controlled testing to establish that belief. If I then CHOOSE to go back and revel in gambling again, I don't deserve to have society pay to help me get back out again and again.
